Punjab Internet Exchange · LIX

Building Punjab’s Digital Backbone

A non-profit initiative by the Council of Computer Education Research and Training (CCERT) to keep Punjab’s internet traffic local—faster, affordable, and secure.

Goal: 5 ISPs • 3 CDNs • 1 Punjab Internet Exchange Fabric

Why This Matters

Why Punjab Needs Its Own Internet Exchange

Every email, video, or message sent within Punjab often travels hundreds of kilometers to Delhi or Mumbai before reaching another user in the same city. This wastes bandwidth, raises costs for Internet providers, and slows down everyday digital life.

The Ludhiana Internet Exchange (LIX) connects all networks within Punjab directly—keeping local traffic local.

The result of peering locally speaks for itself:

  • 10× faster connections between cities
  • Up to 70% lower transit costs
  • Higher resilience during national outages

Our Vision

A Faster, Stronger, and More Independent Digital Punjab

Our goal is to establish a statewide exchange fabric connecting Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Chandigarh—enabling data to stay within Punjab’s borders.

Through cooperation with local ISPs, universities, industries, and government networks, we aim to build a neutral platform that supports:

Education & e-governance

Reliable bandwidth for smart classrooms, online exams, and citizen services.

Start-ups & data centers

Lower latency pathways that attract new infrastructure investment.

Gaming & streaming

Milliseconds saved mean smoother gameplay and HD media without buffering.

Local content hosting

Creators and media houses publish once and serve audiences statewide instantly.

How It Works

Local Peering. Global Impact.

1

ISPs connect to LIX

Providers plug into our neutral switch fabric and exchange traffic within Punjab.

2

CDNs deploy locally

Networks such as Google, Meta, and Cloudflare host caches inside the state.

3

Users experience the gains

Lower latency, lower costs, and higher reliability for every resident and business.

LIX acts as the digital crossroads of Punjab—connecting networks, reducing dependency on metro cities, and improving digital self-reliance.

Social & Economic Impact

Empowering People Through Better Connectivity

Lower Internet costs

Transit savings for ISPs translate into affordable plans for households and businesses.

1–2 ms latency

Statewide services respond in real time, from telemedicine to industrial IoT.

Faster learning

Schools, colleges, and e-learning platforms get reliable access to digital tools.

Business uptime

Factories, logistics hubs, and MSMEs run cloud apps without metro bottlenecks.

Lower carbon footprint

Keeping data within Punjab cuts the energy cost of long-distance routing.
